Spencer Michiel grew up in the restaurant industry, working in his family’s chain of full-service restaurants in Southern BC from a young age. At 14, he began working in the family business and gained hands-on experience in every role—from dishwasher and cook to bartender, server, and eventually management. This deep understanding of restaurant operations shaped his passion for the industry and gave him firsthand insight into the challenges operators face daily.

Recognizing the growing impact of technology on restaurant success, he transitioned to the tech side of the business, working for one of the first cloud-based POS systems on the market. In this role, he helped independent and multi-unit operators streamline operations, improve efficiency, and adopt new digital tools.

Now, as a consultant with Back of House, Spencer Michiel specializes in helping independent restaurant operators navigate the complex world of restaurant technology. He works closely with owners and managers to identify the right solutions—whether it’s POS systems, online ordering, loyalty programs, or operational automation—to enhance efficiency and profitability. His mission is to simplify technology and empower operators to make informed decisions that drive long-term success.

With a lifelong connection to the industry and a deep understanding of both operations and technology, Spencer Michiel is passionate about helping restaurants embrace innovation while staying true to the heart of hospitality.
